Get API key

A step-by-step guide on how to get an API key to use OpenAI models.

👉OpenAI's free tier only allows GPT-3.5 Turbo and up to 3 requests per minute (see Free tier rate limits↗). We suggest pre-paying your account with $5 to increase this limit and unlock access to GPT-4o and GPT-4 Turbo models.

Create an Account on OpenAI

First, visit the official OpenAI website at platform.openai.com↗. Click on the Sign Up button in the top-right corner to create your account. Provide the requested information and submit it. You will have to verify your email before being able to proceed further.
Log In to Your Account

Once your account is set up and verified, log into the OpenAI portal using the same credentials used to sign up.
Navigate to the API Key Section

After logging in, find your OpenAI Dashboard, click on your username at the top right of the screen, then click on API Keys in the drop-down menu.
Generate New API Key

In the API Keys section, click the Create new secret key button. Follow the directions to generate the key.

It's important to remember that your API key is like a password, so treat it as confidential information. Only you should know it and if it falls into the wrong hands, others may be able to use it to access OpenAI's services using your account.
Add a payment method and pre-pay your account

Navigate to Settings -> Billing and add a payment method. Then click Add to credit balance and pre-pay your account.
Enter your API key into Kerlig

You can either do that during onboarding or later, in the Settings.
